چکیده

Objectives Inconsistent results are found in the involvement of the Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA)-axis in cognitive functioning. This study examined the association between various saliva cortisol measures and cognitive functioning in older persons with and without a depressive disorder. Methods Cross-sectional data on 328 depressed and 119 non-depressed older adults between 60-93 years from the Netherlands Study of Depression in Older adults were used. 1-h awakening cortisol, evening cortisol, diurnal slope and cortisol suppression were measured in saliva. Cognitive functioning was evaluated by episodic memory, processing speed, interference control, and working memory. Multivariate analyses were adjusted for relevant confounders. Results No significant associations between cortisol and cognitive functioning were observed in the total sample. Total cortisol secretion over the first hour after awakening and worse episodic memory, and higher cortisol levels at awakening and better working memory were significantly associated in non-depressed, but not in depressed older adults.

The Role of the Endocannabinoids in Suppression of the Hypothalamic- pituitary-adrenal Axis Activity by Doxepin

Objective(s) The mechanism(s) by which antidepressants regulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis remain elusive. The endocannabinoid system (eCBs) which exhibits antidepressant potential, appears to regulate the HPA axis activity. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the role of the eCBs in the action of doxepin including its effect on the HPA axis. Materials and Methods Male Wist...

Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity in older persons with and without a depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND Altered functioning of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA-axis) has been associated with depression, but findings have been inconsistent. Among older depressed persons, both hyperactivity and hypo-activity of the HPA-axis were demonstrated. However, most studies were population-based studies, with single cortisol measurements, lacking insight into diurnal patterns of HPA-ax...

Paeoniflorin regulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis negative feedback in a rat model of post-traumatic stress disorder

Objective(s): To investigate the effects of paeoniflorin (PEF) on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis feedback function of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). cSingle-prolonged stress (SPS) was used to establish a PTSD-like rat model. The contents of plasma corticosterone (CORT), adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH) and cortic...

Can Variation in Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA)-Axis Activity Explain the Relationship between Depression and Cognition in Bipolar Patients?

BACKGROUND Dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is thought to be associated with more mood symptoms and worse cognitive functioning. This study examined whether variation in HPA axis activity underlies the association between mood symptoms and cognitive functioning. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS In 65 bipolar patients cognitive functioning was measured in domains of...

Cortisol secretion in adult male rats

As a neurotransmitter or neuromodulator, brain histamine has a variety of physiological roles in brain functions such as hypothalamic- pituitary- adrenal (HPA) activity. Histamine induces the release of ACTH through the activation of hypothalamic neurons containing vasopressin and CRH. Histamine induces the activity of HPA axis directly or indirectly. Endogenous opioids modulate the (HPA) axis ...
